Laurel: To hitting stride. A national program is working with girls at Highlands Elementary.

Girls on the Run is, as the name would imply, largely about helping girls in third through fifth grades with building their physical fitness through running.

But that’s only half the story. The program is also about preparing girls for another kind of marathon as it aims to help them build confidence and self-esteem and foster connections with others.

“To be able to see the growth is amazing,” student assistance program liaison Cara Kelly said. “To see how proud of themselves they are is amazing.”

It’s the kind of activity that can build to a lifelong habit as well as teaching girls about making and achieving goals. Good job.

Lance: To stealthy stealing. Everyone is watching their money these days with the high price of gas and groceries due to inflation. But two Romanian nationals recently were charged with a scheme to steal credit card and debit card information by having people unwittingly turn it over.

It happened at the Sam’s Club in Frazer, but at least two other stores also were hit before the arrests.

Skimmers are devices that are made to slip over a credit card scanner like a mask, duplicating exactly what you would see if it wasn’t there at all. Because nothing looks amiss, the device collects data without users realizing they are being targeted.

On the watch list: To the counting that won’t end. The race to be the Republican nominee for Pat Toomey’s about-to-be-vacated U.S. Senate seat continues to drag on.

While it was supposed to be over May 17 when voters showed up at the polls for the primary election, it is the statewide race that still isn’t resolved more than a week later — and there is no sign when that could happen. The race is essentially down to two candidates: David McCormick and Dr. Mehmet Oz.

McCormick filed a lawsuit Monday seeking to have undated ballots counted. The GOP countered in favor of Oz by filing to intervene in that action.

On Wednesday, Pennsylvania’s acting Secretary of State Leigh Chapman said the too-close-to-call race is falling in the range for a statewide recount, which likely will put a decision on the nominee off into June.

One beneficiary of this is likely to be the Democratic nominee. Lt. Gov. John Fetterman has plenty of time to recover from the stroke he suffered days before the primary and the defibrillator he had surgically implanted on primary election day because he has no one to actively campaign against.
